Measurement Microphone Recommendations

USB Microphone Recommendations

My understanding is that REW is designed to use omni directional mics so they pick up all reflections. I have a Behringer ECM8000 (I used a generic calibration file) and Earthworks M23 (individually calibrated). It makes very little difference in the resulting measurements - the odd dB perhaps. No measurement package comes with accurate calibration files for any mic. You need to calibrate the mic itself if you want accuracy. REW is pretty straight forward with a large community to help you anytime you have a question. REW also EQing data that can be created exactly for the DCX2496. The best calibration file is one that’s custom to the specific mic. Considering the wide range of response of various ECM8000 samples (as seen in the graph below), a single generic calibration file can’t account for all mics. That said, the deviations appears to be in a +/- 5 dB window, so a generic file would be better than nothing.

For convenience and ease-of-use, a USB-connected measurement microphone can't be beat. Many of these mics come with a calibration file that ensures proper frequency response for measurement purposes.

Analog Microphone Recommendations

Many analog microphones are useable with iRC Measure. Most all measurement - worthy analog mics require a pre-amp with phantom power and a female XLR (from pre-amp) to male 3.5 mm stereo adaptor (to your Mac line input) to operate. Contact your mic's manufacturer to find out if your mic is suitable for measurement use.
